I TAKE THE NEXT TUBE train and take a seat in the carriage. I don’t see the people around me. I don’t hear the whine of the train or the buzz of conversation. All I see is Sam’s face. All I hear are his words as he destroys the foundations of my world.

It was a set-up. It was all a lie. Round and round and round go my thoughts.

Hours pass. When the tube reaches the end of the line I get on another train and begin again. I’ve no idea where I’m going and I don’t care. I’m lost. I’m not sure who I am anymore. All I know is that I can’t return to the Council. Not yet. Not until I’ve worked my way through this damned mess.

Slowly, the trains begin to empty. I guess it must be getting toward midnight. I barely register when someone takes a seat next to me.

“So this is where you’ve been hiding,” says a soft Northern Irish accent.

I look up. Ciaran seems tired. There are dark circles under his eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

Perhaps the Council has sent him. Do they want me dragged in front of them to answer for what I’ve done? The thought makes me sick with dread. I don’t know if I could face questions right now. Yep, it turns out I’m a coward after all.

“Why do you think I’m here?” His voice is low, soft.

“Did you get the evidence to the Council?”

“Yes.”

“And—” My voice falters but I force myself to ask. “How is my father?”

In my mind’s eye I can see his face. Disappointment fills his eyes. Shame. How could his own daughter make such a mistake? I stare down at my feet, blinking back sudden tears and wait for Ciaran to confirm my fears.

“He’s worried about you, Marney.”

“He shouldn’t be. I can take care of myself.”

“Really?” Now his voice sounds incredulous. “Is that what you call riding around on the underground all evening? Taking care of yourself? It looks more like wallowing in self-pity to me.”

That stings. “What the hell do you know about it?”

“Nothing,” he retorts. “Nothing at all. But I’m sure of one thing. The Marney I know wouldn’t be moping and feeling sorry for herself. She’d be out there, trying to find a way to fix this.”

Who the hell does he think he is? “Leave me alone, Ciaran.”

“Why? So you can go back to your navel-gazing and leave the rest of us to clear up your mess? I expected better of you.”

“Did you? Well you should have known better shouldn’t you? Now get the hell out of my face!”

I jerk upright, but he pulls me back down with a sharp tug on my wrist. “I’m not letting you go.”

“Don’t do this, Ciaran.”

His eyes are blazing. God, he’s really pissed off. “Do you even care what’s happening out there? Right now Lord Matthias and your father are meeting with the Prime Minister, trying to explain what the hell happened at Saint Paul’s today. The papers are all over it.
